Legend [edit]

According to legend, [citation needed] the progenitor of this breed did not live in Britain but in Egypt. He was the favorite cat of the Egyptian General Gasthelos and his wife Scota, a cat and fed coccolatissimo, considered a living effigy of a deity. Gasthelos by order of Pharaoh pursued the fleeing Hebrews to the Red Sea, and when his troops were swallowed by the waters that were miraculously opened to pass the fugitives to escape the wrath of Pharaoh, he decided to rally the troops and survivors groped in the lot outside of Egypt, starting from the unknown to found a new nation. Of course, the cat followed him and was invoked as a propitiatory of good luck. Gasthelos Scota and stood first in the kingdom of Brigantium, the current Portugal, then went up to Great Britain, and settled in the land which they named in honor of Scotland Scota. The cat showed a lot to like the new home, mated with several cats that lived in the wild, and from these unions were born the first specimens of this breed.
History [edit]

The British Shorthair is the descendant of cats brought to Britain by the Romans who were then crossed with wild native cats. [2] [3] Historically we know that the British Shorthair lived in the wild, or at least was not recognized and bred as a breed in itself, until the nineteenth century. In the second half of the 800 Harrison Weir decided to select the breed of this cat in his blue variety and presented for the first time at the feline of Crystal Palace in 1871. The British were blue for a long time confused and crossed with the French Carthusian cats, but the characteristics of the genotype of these two races is quite different. The popularity of the breed has decreased since 1940, but by the end of World War II, breeding programs have intensified and the breed's popularity rose again. For a time the British were crossed with Persian cats to make their body softer and rounder head. Today, these crossings are no longer allowed because the breed standard is sufficiently stabilized. Also present are accepted and appreciated many varieties of color were added to the traditional blue.
Breed Standard [edit]

The breed standard (FIFe / FIFE): The British Shorthair is massive, with a very thick coat that makes it look like a stuffed animal, defined as crisp (English word) but fluffy to the touch. The eyes are large, round and very expressive; can be of many varieties of color: copper, gold, green and blue, and most them orange or copper. The cat's head is round and full, with chubby cheeks (especially in males). The body of this cat is big, strong and muscular, described as "cobby". The breed has a broad chest, strong shoulders and hips and short legs, round paws and a tail with a well-stocked with fur, which ends in a rounded tip. [4] These are the characteristics of the breed standard.

The males of this breed are larger than females, the size difference between them is more easily seen than other breeds. Males have an average weight of 6-8 kg, while females can weigh up to 5-7 kg. As with many other breeds, adult males may also develop important cheeks that distinguish them from females. The typical lifespan of this breed is 14-20 years. [5] The typical lifespan of this breed is 14 to 20 years. [4]

These colors include black, blue, white, red, cream, chocolate, lilac, cinamon (cinnamon) and fawn (deer). British Shorthair calico

The British Shorthair is a breed from the very particular nature of cats. They have a stable character, which makes them very suitable as indoor-only cats, that is for apartment life. These cats are, in fact, the typical domestic shorthaired cat. Does not require much attention, so even if the owner were to go away for a few hours this kind of cat does not suffer from loneliness, since it has a very strong tendency to play, even alone. The British Shorthair, despite their propensity to gamble, they are not hyperactive, they are very quiet and can also sleep many hours a day, preferring to stay close to their owners, rather than on them. May supervise the activities of family from a comfortable perch or perhaps from the floor.

The British Shorthair cats are very suitable for working people, as they have no problems nell'oziare just around the house while their owner is out. These cats are not destructive stimuli and generally do not need other pets, even if they have problems in coping with another British Shorthair or a cat with similar temperament. These cats love being pampered and not particularly a race are very noisy, even though there meowing, especially when the food or play video games. The British Shorthair has a tendency to follow people from room to room, to be with their owner and see what is happening. For no other matter to be pampered, and most of these cats prefer to keep all four feet on the ground while being pampered rather than being picked up.

The breed has become a favorite by animal trainers because of its nature and intelligence, and in recent years these cats have appeared in many Hollywood films and television commercials. [5] They can learn little tricks spontaneously. The character of this cat can be described as follows:

* Solid

The British Shorthair cat is so strong physically as he is mentally. The British is very poised, not let go and nervous attacks and does not raise his voice, does not scratch bites out of anger or fear (maximum nibbles to play them, but always very careful not to exceed the allowed limits, and when puts his paws on the master's face always pulls in the nails).

* Independent

The British cat is a dominant, independent and proud, with a great sense of personal dignity. She loves being in the company and tends to follow their masters around the house like a dog, often settling on tables or on chairs or in any position from which has an overview of the movements of the human family. Do not like to be unnecessarily tighten and bully him and decides when it's time for pampering. If handled too recalcitrant with front paws and retired for a while 'on his own.

* Affectionate

It is a lovely cat, sweet, very tied to the family that you feel a part at par.

* Adaptable

The British is more related to the masters house. It adapts well to change and travel. The change of environment is indeed an opportunity to explore new horizons, with the innate curiosity that characterizes it. The British are also very patient with children and if not take it anymore, rather than let them hurt you hide it somewhere it can be at peace for a while '.

* Hunter and playful

The British have a hunting instinct that turns out to campaign with rodents, birds and lizards, and that is unleashed in an apartment on the insects of all kinds. At the sight of a fly on British lights and begins to approach cautiously emitting a characteristic high-pitched sound alarm, up to pounce on its prey is not always with excellent results. The British love the game very well, especially one that reminds him of the hunt, loves chasing the ball that you roll and can learn to bring small objects (ropes, stuffed mice).

The British Shorthair does not require much care, though some could use some brushing every now and then. The British Shorthair may be subject to obesity, especially if neutered or kept indoors, then you should take care of their diet.
